Hessonite or Cinnamon
Stone is a variety of grossular, a calcium aluminum mineral of the garnet
group. The name is from the Greek hēssōn, inferior, in allusion to its lower
hardness and density than most other garnet species varieties.
Hessonite comes chiefly from Sri Lanka, where it is found generally in
placer deposits, though its occurrence in its native matrix is not unknown.
It is also found in Brazil and California. |
Hessonite has a
characteristic red color, inclining to orange, much like that of gem zircon.
Indeed it was shown many years ago, by Sir A. H. Church, that many gems,
especially engraved stones, commonly regarded as zircon, were really
hessonite. Hessonite has a similar hardness to that of quartz, so faceted
and fine polished beads can easily be made out of it. |
Hessonite crystals can be
shaped into any beads, Hessonite round beads, Hessonite oval beads,
Hessonite flat oval beads, Hessonite Buttons, Hessonite drops, Hessonite
tube beads, Hessonite pear beads, Hessonite nuggets, Hessonite tumblers,
Hessonite roughs, Hessonite roundel, Hessonite uncut, Hessonite tire are
the common beads for jewelries. |
Apart from these regular shapes Hessonite faceted tumbler and Hessonite
faceted ovals, Hessonite faceted chewing gums, Hessonite faceted coins and
Hessonite faceted drops, Hessonite faceted heart, Hessonite faceted
briolette have more spectacular, striking and sparkling luster. |
